Meet & Greet

Hey everyone - this is Martin from tonebase!

As the Head of Live and Community here on tonebase, it's such a pleasure to welcome you to the tonebase community. We would love to get to know you! Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format:

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;)
  • What are you currently working on?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community?

I’ll go first:

  • I was born and raised in Munich, Germany! As you’d expect, Bavarian cuisine is heavy and includes many meat and Knödel dishes, as well as crops such as beets and potatoes! While this food makes me think back to my childhood, I prefer much more food from my current hometown Düsseldorf, where we have the biggest Japanese community outside of Japan. So Düsseldorf has no shortage of great Ramen shops, Sushi places, and even Teppanyaki grill houses!
  • When it comes to trumpet, I am clueless! I have studied classical guitar and sound engineering. Currently, I am in the process of recording a new album with my guitar duo, "TwoFourTwelve". I remember that my grandfather used to have a trumpet which I've tried to play when I was 5 years old, but I had no success getting anything but a buzz out of that horn!
  • I am hoping to getting to know and helping all of you achieve your musical and artistic goals. Let's have some fun and get to work!

Now over to you!

Greetings!  I am retired in Tar Heel country.  I played the trumpet through high school, but nothing after that until about a year ago.  Thought I'd pick up right where I left off.  Wrong!! I had to start from scratch.  I'm armed with a new trumpet, scads of books, and a lot of enthusiasm.  My only objectives in returning to the trumpet were to eventually get to a point where I could play jazz ballads at an intermediate + level, and to enjoy the ride along the way.  So far, I'm enjoying the ride!

Yeah. And don't forget the occasional twinges of arthritis in the fingers, or trying to read sheet music top to bottom while wearing glasses with  progessive lens, and just plain slower reflexes.  The youngsters have all the breaks! 🙂

    Hello Everyone,

I’m Paul from a country town in Victoria, Australia.

I played band in school & i make Violins, Violas & Cellos (i got sucked in by the mystery and art of the violin master makers of antiquity 😆).

Recently, I have been inspired to buy a Olds Mendez Trumpet and start playing again. I like vintage horns 😄

My main interest is film scores & jazz. I will be focusing on musicality and in future to do live gigs maybe as a duo.

My favourite foods are Asian, and recently I've been inspired to get out my Asian cookbook.

    Tonebase is an awesome platform.

As with everything, I’m old enough now to know the benefit of accurate practice & a focus on musicality in every part of playing:practice.

Trumpet or any instrument has the ability in the right hands, to transport an audience. Learning to do that is the art..,flashy technique second 🤣🤣🤣

Hey Paul! Nice to meet you and welcome to tonebase! Wow that's super interesting to hear you went down the violin maker path.. do you play at all? (shameless plug for the tonebase violin and cello platforms! haha)...

What sorts of jazz topics might be interesting for you to see on tonebase trumpet? We've just started putting this side of the course library together!

Maybe we'll do a group recipe swap at some point on this forum 😂

      Happy practicing!

Hey Ethan, thanks for the welcome.

So, i didn’t decide yet on any particular jazz style yet. I

tend to be quite eclectic so lets see in coming months.

Tonebase violin is a excellent resource. Well i can play enough to test out my instruments but id rather hire a professional to record them for sales & marketing purposes.

If i may put a plug for my website, it is FineMasterViolins.biz

      Feedback is always useful

I may start a Asian cooking topic but how to tie that into great trumpet playing to make it relavent ? 🤔 Eat well, feel good ~ play better ? 🤣🤣🤣🙏🏿🌟🌈

I'm an 80 yr. old "comeback trumpet player" living in Fort Collins, CO. We, wife Julie and I, enjoy the selections of ethnic food restaurants in this community.  Since graduating from HS in 1962, I have learned so much more about techniques now that I have started back to the trumpet than I ever got back then.  From this community I hope to find further leanings to allow me improve so I can be an asset the groups I hope to be involved in later.

    Hi everyone!

I am from north-west London, UK. Not really a foodie, but fruits and greens always would be a good idea. Boring, I know. 😊

I learned violin as a child, but mostly played guitar and sang since then. Really wanted to pick up playing trumpet fairly late in life, mostly to be able to use it in my songwriting/production. I've been playing trumpet for a few years now. Didn't really think about classical repertoire initially, but I am drawn to both jazz and classical  pieces now.

I hope Tonebase will help me to improve my technique and expression. The lesson on 1st movement of Hummel concerto by Brandon Ridenour is fantastic, although I wish he went through to the end of the piece. Otherwise, I'd like to see more on articulation, particularly jazz vocabulary like trills, growls, half-valves etc. Perhaps, something on recording a trumpet would be nice too.

    Cheers,

    Dee

    Hello!

    1. I’m from Santa Barbara, CA. We’ve got great Mexican food here and thankfully it’s one of my favorite cuisines. You can’t go wrong with tacos and burritos!

    2. I played trombone through college and for a few years after that. In the 25 years since graduating I haven’t played much.

My dad gave me his Bach 37 he played when he was in high school and I thought I’d try something new. I’ve been playing for the last few weeks working through the Pearson Standard of Excellence, embouchure builder by Lowell and the first etude in Hering’s 40 progressive etude.

I’ve generally been a classical person. That speaks to me the most but I do like pop and jazz, just I’ve never been able to grasp improvising. I love the sound of classical trombone and don’t care for the jazz sound. However on trumpet it all sounds good to me.

I figure I have a new opportunity to try a bunch of styles and just play what is fun. I’m not going to get a job in an orchestra so I can just play what is fun!

    3. I had a great time connecting with people on a ukulele forum back in the day. I didn’t really use it to get better more just to have a way to communicate with people that had similar interests. I think community engagement is important in your journey so maybe this time I can figure out how leverage it!

Welcome to tonebase Nick! Super excited to have you onboard. I like your attitude – it's all about making music fun and enjoyable, and hopefully learn a thing or two in the process. Thanks for sharing!
If I could offer some tonebase course recommendations for you at this level: I'd check out Ben Gunnarson's new course Fundamentals for Developing Players, as well as the Beginner Repertoire course I made (I even did a lesson on a Vincent Herring etude). But you can't go wrong with anything on the platform.

In terms of community engagement, I couldn't agree more. We do weekly live streams (usually on Mondays) as well as weekly discussions on different topics! Feel free to jump in and connect. We've also started two-week intensive classes on different topics, though these are only once a month (the next one starts in mid-July).

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for the recommended courses. I will check them out!

I’m beginning to notice that a lot of this is mental. If you understand principles and you always strive to achieve them in your playing, little by little you’ll get closer to your ideal. I’ve really enjoyed that aspect this time around. All the courses I’ve taken so far have little gems that has helped

me me think about things in a different way and made them click. I just have to be patient!

Absolutely! It can be super mental at times, and it's an extremely gradual process. It's important to be patient and forgiving with yourself – and some information can take a long time to truly get and incorporate. Everyone needs different things at different moments. Best of luck to you!

    1. I was born in England, grew up in Canada, and now live in Japan.  My favorite food is Kobe steak.

    2.  I am working on developing various combinations of musical trios playing improvised music.

    3. My desire from these courses is to improve my facility on the instrument.  It is a lifelong study.  From what I see of the free sample videos, it looks to be a goldmine of expert information and advice.

I'm Tomás, I just subscribed a couple days ago!

It's a bit hard to explain where I'm from but I'll try to be short 😆 my family is italian but I grew up in Brazil, now I live in Portugal but I'm planning to move to another country in french-speaking europe soon. My favourite food from Brazil is moqueca, a kind of seafood stew, and from Italy... real pizza! 🤣👑

I started music and trumpet "late" at 23, 4 years ago. However I come from practicing other arts and this helped me for having sensibility and discipline during study. After the first year I started technique lessons with a private teacher and then was lucky to be invited to play with 2 semi-professional bands, one of latin-american music, mostly cumbia and salsa, and one of balkan-gypsy and greek-turkish music. So for the last 2 summers I've been playing festivals around Portugal plus a couple short tours in nearby countries.

I am working on fundamentals most everyday aswell as the vocabulary for both styles I mentioned above. However I am also interested in studying Jazz and playing other styles. I am thinking of applying for a Jazz school next year, hoping I manage to enter at university level. I've always been interested in music theory and taken joy in it but only since last winter I've doubled down on practicing solfege. I also study a bit of guitar, mostly in world folk styles, as I feel it's importat to play a harmonic instrument, but my main focus is trumpet.

So what I'm hoping to get here is support for my fundamentals practice and for my need to dive into Jazz to prepare for the entrance exams next year. I also would mind to dip a little into the classical repertoire, I'm hoping it will help me develop sight reading since because of my unusual music path I haven't had much access to written material.

My goal is to be a full-time working musican!

Finally this introduction was quite long but I hope to find some connection to a community here! So far the courses have been very nice, since day 1  I feel pushed and already see my embouchure and tone is changing!

I'm Mark, and I just subscribed today!

I'm originally from California, but have been in Waxahachie, Texas since 2023. My favorite food is Texas Barbecue.

I'm a semi-comeback player, after not playing much for 5 yrs. Prior to that, I played semi-pro in churches, community bands, jazz bands, and taught trumpet students for 40 yrs. I'm blessed to now be the Trumpet Instructor for the National and International award-winning Waxahachie Indian Band program and a local homeschool co-op band program. 32 trumpet students (from beginners to advanced) and adding more each week! I'm also principal trumpet in the local community band and Co-Lead Trumpet in the county Big Band.

I hope to continue honing my skills as a musician and teacher, building and leaving a legacy of fine trumpeters in this region of TX.

    Hello Tonebase Trumpet Community!!

I live in a town called Utopia that is about 90 kilometers north of Toronto and work for an automotive manufacturer as an Industrial Electrician.  I am about 25 minutes drive away from the longest freshwater beach in the world – Wasaga Beach.  Butter tarts are my favourite food/dessert here.  I grew up in a town to the south called Beeton.

I am currently working on my level 1 RCM exam that is coming up the first week of October.  I would like to get to my grade 5 over the next 2 years and eventually complete my ARCT in Performance.  I study with a professional player through in-person and remote lessons.

My practice covers fundamentals, etudes, repertoire and I mix in blues and jazz material as well.  Books I am working with right (in addition to the RCM materials) Chase Sanborn’s 6/60 and Brass Tactics, Chops by Frank Williams and Trumpet Aerobics by Kevin Johnson.

I am looking for inspiration and interpretations of concepts that will speak to me in a way I haven’t understood before, I am hoping to connect with other like-minded players to discuss practicing, performing and collaborating to become better at this amazing instrument.

    1.  I am from NJ, USA.  I love most food and try as many different foods as I travel the world.  I lived in Brazil and they have a so many wonderful fruits like giant coconuts that I drank from as well as a fried cheese which was wonderful.  And of course eating at a churrascaria.  In France, I used to stop by the local bakery every time I would visit and pick up anything.  It was all so good.  In Portugal, who could go wrong with Pastéis de Nata.  Or whenever I go to an Indian restaurant, I love rice kheer.  In Mexico it was the corn on a cob called elote.  And in Ireland it was there brown bread made with Guinness.

    2.  So, I started playing trumpet in elementary school and continued straight through college and studied at Peabody Conservatory.  However, I decided to major in electrical engineering and computer science which took me on a path and a great career, which has continued from startups, Bell Labs and now as a lecturer at a university.  Throughout I played trumpet off and on.  I was part of a Ukrainian dance band, an Irish brass band, many brass groups and church performances.  So while I am too busy to keep a consistent practice, I have always wondered how to play better.

    3.  I need tips to improve my trumpet playing and I am always finding that there are areas of my playing where I was trained incorrectly and need to see how many of these great teachers might help me--many of them I have met in person or follow through videos.
