Ethan Chilton's Practice Diary

Hey there folks! I'd let this feature sit on the backburner a bit, but thanks to  I thought I'd put something of my own together. I'd like for others to post something similar if they're so inclined by creating a new post in the Practice Diary category!

In fact, I think I'm willing to commit to posting a practice update every single week for myself. This will hold me more accountable in my own personal practice, and hopefully throw some more inspiration out there for you all!

What are you practicing? Why are you practicing it? Where are you stuck? There are a few worksheets/resources for organizing this that I've put here, and I'd like to encourage others to utilize them.

Practice resources

Check out this page for our tonebase practice resources, as well as videos from tonebase founder Chris Garwood demonstrating how to utilize them for best results!

These are also all attached to this post

I use these to identify my priorities, plan my practice sessions, and hold myself accountable!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 16TH

I'm preparing for a show on Saturday the 21st and an evening recording session on October 4th. So I'm working primarily on fundamentals and improvisation.

Here are my goals for this coming week!

Update for week of September 23rd!

I had a show on Saturday that felt great. It was a really intimate outdoor duo concert, and I was playing with an effects rig. My tone was the way I wanted it and my control also felt nice. However I think I'm working a bit too hard to get a dark sound since my mouthpiece is very bright, so I'd like to make it a priority this week to start searching for a larger mouthpiece that keeps the 3c rim that I've grown accustomed to.

Other than that, I'm prepping for a rehearsal next Sunday before recording a friend's album. So it'll be back to more jazz. Updated goal sheet is here!
