Describe the most moving concert you've ever attended.

Was it a symphony? A wind band? A small jazz group? Was it a famous name or a nobody? Tell us about that one moment you were listening… crying… overwhelmed by a performance (it’s ok to admit if you cried….) Who was playing? What piece really did it for you?

The Portuguese fado singer Mariza at the Colston Hall in Bristol about 15 years ago. The first five songs, I felt ambushed by waves of emotion. The timbre of the instruments, especially the fado guitar: the words and emotions of the songs (I knew them and I understand Portuguese): their melodies, rhythms and modulations: and above all the voice, phrasing and presentation of Mariza herself.

this is from a couple of years earlier in London

Not a concert I attended but watched on TV. Celine Dion powerhouse performance at the Olympics 2024's opening ceremony singing L'Hymne à l'Amour.

My favorite concert was actually a series of concert in which I had the opportunity to be a part of the program..  It was playing 3 rd trumpet on the B Minor Mass with the LA Chamber Orchestra ..  Tony Plog played first (so great!) and Byode Hood (also great).  Helmut Rilling was the conductor and the choir was from Germany.   We played Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, etc.....the music is heavenly... the structure of the composition so strong.   Memorable.

I've been to so many great and moving performances that it's hard to say. So many had their own particular quality that made them remarkable. But for some reason a few stand out in my memory consistently over the years. The original Paul Butterfield Blues Band at Town Hall in NYC in 1965 still vibrates in my body. The Electric Flag (with Steppenwolf and Quicksilver as opening acts and Jimi Hendrix accompanying the Flag for the encore) at the Fillmore East in 1968. Maya Beiser with Philip Glass conducting the orchestra on his live soundtrack for Naqoykatsi. The Liberation Music Orchestra. Terrence Blanchard's trumpet solo during his Tale of God's Will at SFJazz. So many more.
