What makes a compelling interpretation? How can we interpret music more convincingly? Dr. Robin Wilson, currently a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and The Yehudi Menuhin School, has emerged as one of the foremost violin pedagogues of our time. His students' sensational successes, securing top prizes at international competitions, have astounded the world, showcasing not only technical prowess but also nuanced, thoughtful, and mature interpretations. ā€œA compelling interpretation comes from a thorough understanding of the score, the un-notated performance conventions of the period, and a sincere human reaction to what is unfolding.ā€

In this presentation, Dr. Robin Wilson take you through a practical process of musical interpretation. He will explore score reading and how the information in a score informs how we play. Giving musical examples, we delve into understanding how harmony, texture, rhythm, meter and orchestration all guide the way we interpret a phrase and capture a character. Weā€™ll look at the expressive techniques, stemming from performance traditions of bygone eras, that we must be aware of that arenā€™t printed in the score. Weā€™ll consider how all of this information causes us to react and then explore ways of using aspects of our technique such as sound, colour, articulation and vibrato to convey a musical message.
