Hi! Any advice on how to work on wider intervals? Working on Arban p125 and staccato it feels great, slurred/legato it feels like anything over the octave is miles apart.

Thanks for your questions Freddie! Barring a minor technical interruption, Allen addressed this in the stream. Basically, when we play wider intervals staccato, our tongue is providing substantial energy to the vibration. When we play legato, we have to find a different way to create that energy in order for the higher note to speak. Allen mentioned it feels a bit like he's playing subsequent notes a bit louder when he's slurring higher, but really it's a more energetic air stream.

He didn't mention the tongue, but Charlie Porter talks extensively about this in his courses - his "trampoline" analogy can be helpful for some players. In fact, he might go over that exact page of Arban in his course on Arban :)

    Hi Freddi,

I have been checking out Andrea Guifreddi on internal practice.

If you are comfortable with his approach you can up your game by playing your second notes up the octave and using Charlie Porters idea of playing the second note softer on the way up and playing the second note louder on the way down. I find it helps my seating.

    Sid
