Why did you pick the trumpet? (Or… why did the trumpet pick you?)

I originally tried out for percussion in 5th grade because it was cool to me back then but they had me try trumpet instead and it was probably the best instance of me not getting what I wanted but turned out to be even better. Essentially it picked me.

I was playing Accordion in English Dance bands and would occasionally play with a Trumpeter. I just loved the sound. I then discovered my son’s old school Trumpet and the rest is history.

Hi Ethan
I’m playing for English Border Morris dance side, so tunes are mainly traditional English or French folk tunes. These are general fairly fast without breaks so bit of a blow on Trumpet and often quite high after being transposed for Bb instrument.

When it was time to choose an instrument for band, in 4th grade, I chose trumpet because I loved the Lieutenant Kije Suite which was in my parent’s record collection. The haunting trumpet melody really spoke to me. Many years later when a close friend asked me , “why the trumpet”? I said, “ to make my loudness beautiful”.

I have learned other instruments - cello, classical and flamenco guitar and piano over my 69 years. Never very well.
Then a couple of years ago I noticed I was listening to a lot of trumpet especially Tomasz Stanko and Avishai Cohen. So I picked up a cheap trumpet on eBay …
After a couple of year fooling around I joined a community big band this month. It’s a blast and a great incentive to practice and improve.

When I in the 4th grade and they asked what instrument would I like to play, I simply knew that I wanted to be in the band. I thought that the trumpet might be a good instrument. I knew who trumpet players were like Louie Armstrong and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Other than that, not sure. By 8th grade, when I was first chair, I knew that I really liked it.

In grade school, I saw Louis Armstrong on the Ed Sullivan Show and yearned to play like that but didn't until as an adult I met a superb jazz trumpeter and started learning from him.

I had to pick an instrument to play in high school band, and I thought trumpet would be great. It was loud, made really neat sounds and was small enough to make taking home to practice manageable. Dizzy Gillespie was the person who I thought of who played trumpet. Fast forward 31 years and my father in law gave my son his trumpet to use to practice with. Well, I picked it up one day just to see if I could make a sound and remembered the first sensations of making notes and started playing again. A desire to be a well rounded player in classical and jazz improvisation is what motivates me to pick it up every day.
